Duties & Responsibilities


The Animal Control Officer (ACO) is responsible for the enforcement of the state and municipal (local) animal welfare laws and ordinances. Although the ACO’s duties are limited to domesticated animals, the ACO also responds to calls involving wildlife when rabies is a concern. The ACO conducts inspections, investigations and issues warnings and citations.

All dogs over 6 months of age are required by law to be licensed.  Dog license fees are $6.00 for neutered/spayed dogs and $11.00 for non-altered dogs.
A State imposed late fee of $25.00 per dog will be charged starting February 1st, 2023 
If you no longer own your dog, have moved, or if your dog has passed; please contact the Newfield Town Office at
207-793-4348.

Please remember that if you register a new dog online, you must still provide a current rabies certificate to the town office before a tag will be issued.
