The Newfield Volunteer Fire Department (NFD) provides fire suppression and other emergency services to the Town of Newfield Maine. NFD has 32 volunteer members, 18 members are State of Maine Certified Firefighters. The Department has a Junior Firefighter program for those from 14 years to 18 years old. There is also a NFD Auxiliary organization. NFD works closely with the Newfield Rescue Squad. The Newfield Fire Department has a long standing reputation in the region for always pulling a crew together for any emergency.
NFD operates out of the Newfield Public Safety Building at 85 Water Street (across from Moulton Lumber). There are eight engine spots in the building, three of the engine spots are used by the Newfield Rescue Squad. The building is also Red Cross Emergency shelter. There is an emergency generator to supply the facility with electricity. The facility also has a cell phone booster that enables any cell phone to get a good signal.
NFD apparatus consists of Engine 1, a 1999 International chassis, Metalfab Pumper and Engine 2, a 1999 International chassis, E-One Pumper. Each of these apparatus can pump 1250 Gallon of water Per Minute. Each carries 1000 gallons of water and 1000′ of large diameter 5” supply hose and several hundred feet of smaller diameter attack hose. E-1 is our preferred on scene apparatus with E-2 going to the water source. Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is carried for five Firefighters, with reserve tanks, on each Engine.
NFD’s newest acquisition is Tanker 2. Tanker 2, is a 1982 Ford that carries 2200 gallon of water. It has a 300 Gallon Per Minute pump so it can self-fill from a water source if needed. Since purchase of Tanker 2 in 2009 it has proven to be a very valuable asset to the Department. In one fire Tanker 2 delivered over 15,000 gallons of water to the scene! Tanker 2 also carries a new 2400 portable tank thanks to Newfield’s mutual aid plan with Parsonsfield. As NFD’s “BIG GREEN MACHINE” it is a very recognizable piece of equipment.
NFD has one of the few pure pieces of forestry apparatus in the region. Nicknamed “Bertha” this 1944 International 10 x 10 former USMC vehicle will go anywhere! Bertha carries 700 gallons of water, five hundred feet of forestry hose on a reel, more forestry hose in backpacks, a dozen backpack pumps, gasoline powered portable pumps and a huge array of other forest fire equipment that she will surely get to wherever it is needed!
The Fire services always needs and encourage new volunteers. You can get as lightly involved or as deeply involved as you choose! Any and all help will certainly be appreciated by your neighbors! Newfield Fire Department business meetings are on the 2nd Thursday of every month. We also meet every Tuesday during the month at 1900 hours. This may be a work session, a chat session or serious training.
